Like the third consecutive edition of the Vinibio Organic wine fair which has just come to a close, organic and biodynamic wines from France continue to go from strength to strength. Let’s take a closer look.
Vinibio: a window on French organic wines
Over the last two years, Vinibio has become the ultimate wine event for enthusiasts of French organic wines, and a major platform too for more than 120 exhibitors. The context is more than favourable, with organics riding the storm as the only food sector seeing positive growth, given that almost nine out of ten French consumers profess to eating and drinking organic1.
Vinibio has come just at the right time on the wine landscape, as it grows progressively and has now found its home for the first time at Porte de Versailles, Paris. The wine fair remains true to its roots. “The fair is aimed at professionals and wine enthusiasts alike. Visitors can discover more than 500 wines, all certified organic, from smaller, relatively unknown appellations to the more famous greats”, explains Lilas Carité one of the fair’s organisers, and also responsible every two years for publishing a guide of the best places to buy organic and biodynamic wines: Le Guide Carité des bonnes addresses du vin Bio et biodynamique.
France, a major force in organic wines sales around the world
Production of organic wines is on the rise and its sphere of influence is having a positive effect on wine exports in general. In just eight years, the area under organic wine production has more than tripled. In 2016, exports increased by 32%, mainly due to the impetus of the US, Germany and Japan, which top the table for their love of organic wines. And if French wines are performing well in international markets, French organic wines grew by 46%2. “The success of organic wines at the moment is such that demand far outstrips available supply, but this will soon change as more producers make the shift to convert to organic viticulture,” explains Lilas Carité. Everything seems stacked in favour of organic wines, largely due to a particularly dynamic product and growing demand, both in France and in export markets. “France has garnered an excellent reputation for its wines, which is a useful launch-pad to sell organically-certified wines,” explains Lilas Carité. In the meantime, organic wines increase market share year on year and attract new buyers, while the quality of the offer is scaling new heights. The wines also meet the every-increasing expectations of the market: “Consumers are more and more curious as to what is behind the label, and more likely to seek out wines with lower levels of sulphites,” explains Franck, manager of a specialist organic wine in Paris. Organics, what’s the story?
Organic wines are produced following a strict set of rules and regulations governing the way the grapes are grown and how they are made. So they are made without chemicals and pesticides, and rules are similarly strict on the use of additives and winemaking substances and limit the use of sulphites. The term “organic wine” is an official certification granted only after a three-year long conversion process.
